Making the College Admission Process about You

Highschool me personally in Such A Thing Goes

Greetings from sunny Southern California! My name is Jessica Frey (informally known as J Frey) and I am a Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at USC. I spent my youth in Hollister, a farm that is tiny in Northern Ca that has no affiliation whatsoever with the clothing store. I attended a large public highschool with over 3,000 students and somehow found my way to USC to study theatre. My hope is that through sharing my experiences that are own I can give you some advice and help you feel at ease once you approach the school admission process.

Numerous of you readers is applying to college before long, and I wish to make sure you know that is planning to be all about you. It might feel a little weird and selfish for anyone whom are constantly putting other’s needs before your own personal. But in order for you yourself to make an informed college list and end up at a destination where you belong and feel happy, you do need to make the college search procedure exactly about yourself.

I do not know about you, nevertheless when I became in senior school I made a great deal of my decisions predicated on just what others were doing and thinking. It’s cool to put on pants that are red? Okay, maybe I will go get that pair I was eyeing at the mall weekend that is last. All the other kids within my class are applying to College XYZ? Maybe I should too. My counselor states I’d be good at engineering since I like my calculus course? We wonder though I have NO IDEA what being an engineer is all about if I should apply to engineering, even. They were all real ideas I had since well as many others throughout that anxious and stressful fall semester of senior year.

Whilst it is very easy (and quite often a good thing) for outside influences to shape your decisions, the college process ought to be one where you let your own thoughts and ideas navigate your alternatives. Listed below are three fundamental principles I do believe every senior high school pupil should retain in mind they are going to apply to college while they decide where:

Focus on facts rather than opinions. Many people form views about different universites and colleges, you should really consider your own ideas regarding the schools as well as the information you see as you study the colleges that interest you. It is important that you’re enthusiastic about a college because they offer something which you need in your undergraduate experience- not only because other folks you know are fans of the college, or because of its well-known reputation.

Reflect on that which you want in a college experience, and accordingly apply to schools. It is now time for you to be a happy and thriving student for you to think about what a college campus should have in order. Do you want to attend college in a large city or a college town that is rural? Would you like to study abroad in a country that is particular? What sort of activities do you wish to pursue outside the classroom? Would you like to have the ability working closely with your professors? If you find a school you’ve never heard of however it has all you’re looking, include it to the list! It doesn’t matter if nobody from your college or family ever knew about the faculty just before your breakthrough. It could be a place where you will have an enjoyable college experience.

Enjoy the search process! The procedure of developing your college list can be a daunting task, but it is also an experience that is enjoyable. This can be your possiblity to learn just as much as you can about the many amazing colleges and universities across the country. This is your time for you to explore the array that is wide of and look closely at the colleges you are considering.

I don’t write this website to tell you should not listen to your parents, counselors, or peers. You may have resources that are wonderful your disposal that offer great advice and understanding. Counselors find out about a variety of colleges that can have the ability to tell you more about the ones that meet your criteria. Your parents will be able to help determine which schools will be at your fingertips financially. You simply have to produce sure their advice also aligns with everything you want in an university experience.

That being said, we did buy and totally rocked the red jeans. I’ll acknowledge if I could get in that I applied to a college I had no intention of attending just to see. I did get into the college, but during the end of the time that didn’t matter. It didn’t make me feel better about myself also it was quite honestly a waste of time and cash. But I did follow my heart and became a theater major in place of an engineer, and I’m therefore happy I did. More on that later.
